This is my personal blog which I began in February 2001. I called it The Obvious? when I wrote anonymously and chose the name to reflect the fact I have to overcome my inhibitions about stating the obvious!

Genies still stuck in bottles.

Johnnie Moore wrote today:

All this inventive technology is being made available to just about anyone with a web connection. How does it compare for engagement and collaboration with anything inside the firewall of organisations? I've argued before that, over the last few years, the technological advantage has shifted massively away from companies to individuals. I think we may only have scratched the surface of the impact this will have.

On a daily basis I am reminded just how constrained people still working in corporate environments are compared to what is possible, and indeed easy and cheap, for me as a freelancer. This is not only in terms of technology but also in terms of use of time and productivity.

It is madness that we burden the clever people in our organisations in these ways and the bigger the organisation the worse it gets!

    I don't disagree with his main point - there's no doubt that many organisations are hindering their peoples' performance with an outdated attitude to new technologies. However, what I don't think gets nearly enough recognition is that not all individuals want to use social software or new technology, or care about ...

I second these statements and emotions.

I remain very surprised that it has become clearer that a more natural way of working (by oneself and with others) is on offer, and needn't make much short-term displacement of how things are generally done, just adds additional dimension at the outset.

Another reader assumed I was writing about fun social stuff but I am just talking about the basic ability to get things done.

I had a conversation recently with someone about use of corporate phones and even that raised all sorts of issues about usability, trust and effectiveness.
